Karen Copen

Karen Copen has been inspired by the work of American traditional painters such as John James Audubon, among others. Karen's representations of coastal landscapes reveal a luminous, masterful feeling. As you view her art, you will discover a relaxed sense of calmness; a characteristic that defines and informs all of his works. Karen's captivating artwork has earned her many awards.

Karen grew up in South Bend, Indiana spending much of her time outdoors. Her passion for art started while she was in elementary school which continued in middle school when she received a young artist scholarship to study art at the South Bend Art Center.  Additionally, she won Scholastic Art awards every year from middle school through high school. She took college and adult art classes while in high school honing traditional drawing, painting, print making and photography techniques. In 1984, Karen was the winner of three scholarships, taking her to Columbus College of Art and Design where she studied advertising and illustration. She was a Graphic Designer and an Art Director at Kersker Advertising and K Graphics, working with Muirfield Village, the Nature Conservancy and Special Olympics. She developed curriculum and taught art in Columbus, Ohio for many years.

2020 proved to be a pivotal year for Karen Copen who moved from Columbus, Ohio to Key Largo, Florida. Immediately captivated by snorkeling with sea creatures and photographing coastal views, Karen went from painting cityscapes to coastal landscapes. She joined the Art Guild of the Purple Isles and the Photo Club and enjoys showing her art a local venues.

Karen continually strives to capture the beautiful essence of nature. Her mission is to capture the moment of connectedness she has with nature and share that harmony with the viewer emphasizing the color, light and texture. She works and sells her originals in Reef Gallery at the Ocean Reef Club.
